This episode takes place in 1946, shot and scored in a film noir style. It was completely tracked with vintage cues from multiple music libraries, APM being one of the main libraries we used. If you’re not familiar with the term “tracking”, it means that you place pre-existing music in a scene and edit it to fit, so it seems like it was written specifically for that scene. I auditioned around 250 different cues to come up with the vintage underscore in this episode. In this episode there were 72 music starts, 61 of those being tracked vintage cues. Just for reference, a typical episode is around 30 starts (20 scored cues, 10 source). I not only tried to stay true to the sound of the film noir, but also the how and why of the cue placement. Referencing old films like The Maltese Falcon and noting where and why they placed cues. Since the cues came from multiple sources, and the fidelity of the tracks varied greatly, I needed to arrange the tracks so they could be eq’d and processed to sound like one cohesive score. Also in this episode you’ll get to hear the multi-talented Lesley-Ann Brandt & Tom Ellis perform a couple of on camera musical numbers. This episode definitely was a challenge creatively and technically. Check it out on Netfilx…hope you enjoy!
